The father of writer Kenji Miyazawa grew up in an environment firmly tied with family rules. He wants to let his own children experience freedom and make decisions about their own future. The powerful bond and mutual support between the siblings will eventually evolve into a literary legacy that will influence generations of future readers.
Perhaps every son in the world wishes to raise his own children differently from his own upbringing. For Masajiro Miyazawa, his first-born son Kenji comes first. Contrary to the tradition and the obligation to take over the family pawn shop, both Kenji and his sister Toshi leave to study. Kenji seeks his path for a long time, and only disease and difficult times within the family eventually guide him to his true mission in life – to become a writer.
The film is an adaptation of a novel of the same name, portraying the childhood and coming of age of Kenji Miyazawa, one of Japan’s most popular writers of children’s books, from the perspective of a loving father. You can look forward to Min Tanaka as the head of the family, and Koji Yakusho (lead roles in Perfect Days and Under the Open Sky) as the writer’s father.
